5 Tips to Keep Your Harvesting Blade Sharp

1. Clean the blade after every session. Sap and debris left on the edge speed up corrosion and dull the metal faster than normal use.

2. Store it dry. Moisture is the biggest cause of rust on carbon steel blades — wipe it down and store it somewhere dry, not in a damp shed.

3. Sharpen little and often. A few passes with a whetstone or file every few sessions keeps the edge in good shape, rather than waiting until it's visibly blunt.

4. Check the angle before sharpening. Match your sharpening stroke to the blade's existing bevel angle instead of guessing — it keeps the edge consistent over time.

5. Inspect the holder and joints regularly. A loose holder puts uneven stress on the blade and can throw off your cutting angle even if the edge itself is sharp.
